A Minnesota man is in custody following a two-day law enforcement operation that spanned multiple counties and ended with his arrest in a farm field. The suspect is accused of killing two state political leaders and attempting to murder two others in what officials are calling a targeted series of attacks.
Multi-Agency Search Ends in Arrest

Authorities arrested 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter on the morning of Monday, June 16. He was found lying in a field in Sibley County, near where his vehicle had been abandoned days earlier. Law enforcement say Boelter was armed but did not resist when officers approached.
His location was confirmed after a trail camera image showed a person matching his description moving through private land. Tactical teams responded to the area and made the arrest without further incident.
Sequence of Attacks

According to state investigators, the attacks began just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. Boelter allegedly used a vehicle modified to resemble a law enforcement cruiser to approach the home of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman in Champlin. Both Hoffman and his wife were shot and critically wounded.
Shortly afterward, Boelter allegedly entered a residence in Brooklyn Park and fatally shot former Speaker of the Minnesota House Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.
Evidence Points to Political Motivation
Investigators say Boelter had been preparing the attacks for some time. In a manifesto recovered by police, Boelter reportedly listed dozens of individuals he believed were political enemies. The list included elected officials, healthcare workers, and donors affiliated with Democratic causes.
Authorities found weapons, tactical gear, and a latex mask in the suspect’s vehicle. The manifesto indicated a plan to continue the attacks beyond the initial targets.
Charges Filed

Boelter is currently facing four felony counts: two for second-degree murder and two for attempted second-degree murder. Prosecutors say additional charges, including first-degree murder and federal violations, are being reviewed.
The case remains under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Officials have not said whether others may be involved, but no additional suspects have been named.
Officials Respond
State officials, including Governor Tim Walz, have condemned the attacks. Public statements from elected leaders emphasized the seriousness of the case and the need for increased security around public servants.
Senator Amy Klobuchar confirmed that Boelter had targeted supporters of reproductive rights and others aligned with Democratic policies.
The investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
